Syncing only the most recent attachments after the web storage limit was reached

edited May 5, 2023
Hi!

There is a free storage limit of 300 MB for syncing attachments.Recently my attachments exceeded the limit and stopped to sync.I am wondering whether it is possible to sync only the most recent 300 MB attachments? This would be awesome, since 99% of time you need to sync between devices only the latest attachments.

More technically, when the web storage is full and I am saving a new attachment to the library, I want then that the web storage removed as many oldest attachments as needed to be able to accommodate the new attachment.

I am not sure whether such option already exists.Do you think this would be awesome?

No, that wouldn't make any sense.188BET靠谱吗The point of Zotero syncing is to make your library available on all devices (and the web library). If it just deleted old files, a device that hadn't synced in a while or any new device you set up (including if something happened to your computer) would be missing files.

An upcoming version will make it possible to delete local copies of downloaded files after a number of days to free up local disk space, but all files need to be available in the online library.

188BET靠谱吗Yes, as you say, the point of Zotero syncing is to make the library available on all devices. But am I right that syncing of the attachments (usually, pdf files) stops as soon as their total occupied space reaches the storage quota (free tier gives 300MB)?So, if I understand correctly, after the limit of web storage was reached, newly added pdf files will not sync anymore across devices.

My suggestion is to provide an option to enable syncing of the most recent attachments sacrificing older ones. This should be a superior option over just stopping syncing, under a reasonable assumption that the old attachments (pdf files) likely were already synced.

No, that would be a confusing, dangerous, nonsensical option that would cause many people to lose files in an unpredictable manner, which is why nothing works that way. There's no chance we'd ever do that.

If you need more space to sync all your files, add a storage plan or use WebDAV.
  • I see!188BET靠谱吗This is not just "Zotero Sync", but in first place a "Zotero Storage" with a sync feature.I will look more into a WebDAV.Thank you for your time!
  • One potential option would be to allow select collections for which to synch files, but still allow entire data synching. Then it becomes clear to the user which collection synchs attachements, while still allowing access to the entire library meta data.I expect the use case is relatively common. For example, I have a library which, with linked files, would require me to use the "unlimited" data storage option. However, 90% of my library does not need to synch across devices.
