188BET靠谱吗Linked Attachment Base Directory and Moving Zotero to an External HDD

File under "ask first"
I maintain rather large Group Libraries whose attachments need to be stored locally from what I have experienced.I have used ZotFile to move most of my own attachments to pCloud. This has worked well.188BET靠谱吗However, for reasons of space, I would like to move my entire Zotero Library (including the Data Directory) to a local, external SSD.188BET靠谱吗As long as I remember to quit Zotero before detaching the drive, I gather that this should not be a problem. My question is, will it just be a matter of changing my Linked Attachment Base Director after migrating to the external SSD?188BET靠谱吗Or will have Zotero residing an external SSD cause problems maintaining a base directory in Cloud Storage?

I would be very grateful for any advice or clearing up any misunderstandings I may have about how the Data Directory and Link Attachment Base Directory work.

TIA
  • The location of the data directory has nothing to do with linked files. That's a separate setting.
  • Also, people often have problems with the database on SSDs -- even a fast external HD is typically less performant than a built-in one and there's also a steady trickly of users who report issues with the database not loading properly.None of these are particularly dangerous issues in the sense of database corruption, so you can try this, but it's very much possible it won't work.
  • It's not the most 'bullet-proof' setup but I have seen such setups work well.If you need to move large file collections between different PCs it's a reasonable way of doing it.It's the way people often moved their work between work desktop PCs and home desktop PCs, when other options were not available.

Your data directory location is set under Preferences\Advanced\Files & Folders.

188BET靠谱吗Since you also have Group libraries (which do not support linked files), you must be using Zotero online storage to sync those. And so all your data is synced across all (online) computers. That will include the database's recorded locations of your (personal, non-Group) linked attachment files.

188BET靠谱吗If those personal linked attachment files are at the *same* (cloud-mirrored) location on all computers then you don't actually need a Linked Attachment Base Directory setting (which only tells Zotero where to *look* for linked attachments). But once you've set a LABD on one computer the database's stored attachment locations change!so a LABD setting is then needed on all (data-synced) computers.

Of course you should have very good backups.

  • Thank you all for your timely and helpful explanations and advice.I have backed everything up and will see how it goes.Thank you again
