The good news is that the parent style "American Phytopathological Society" seems to be working well.I switched to that one, and the citations ordered themselves alphabetically and the extraneous periods in the references disappeared!

I also tried a third route: 3.Used word to save the code as a txt file (vs.the rtf file generated by text editor), changed the extension to .csl from .txt, and tried both routes.Similar to option 2, nothing happened at all.
